Monday Evening Mindfulness Meditation and Compassion Course
January - March 2019
This 8-week course will help you to learn and use mindfulness and compassion-based practices in every day life. It is suitable for most people including those who would like to learn additional ways to manage long-term health conditions. The focus will be on learning how to ground yourself in the present moment and connect with a sense of stillness and calm. The mindfulness practices learned in this course will enable you to understand your own reactivity, recognise and step back from negative thinking, relate more whole-heartedly to others and to approach the challenges of life with greater ease and self-compassion.
The course is an ideal way to learn a range of evidence-based mindfulness meditation practices, step-by-step in a supportive environment. It is also for those who would like to deepen their previous experience of an 8-week course and those who wish to reconnect with or refresh their meditation practice.
Preparation before applying for the course
You can watch a YouTube video of mindfulness meditation on BBC Breakfast hereto help you decide if mindfulness is right for you. This video is now over 5 years old but it will give you an idea of what it is like to be in a mindfulness class and some of the benefits of learning to meditate. The video focuses on the benefits of meditation for a woman with persistent (chronic) pain and the reporter who lives a busy and stressful life.
The maximum number of people in the class will be 12.
Essential orientation class
Orientation class: 7pm - 8:30pm Monday 14th January 2019
Please be aware that you will not be accepted on the course if you cannot attend this and/or the first class on Monday 21st January 2019. The orientation class will be held in Dulwich Village (not the Church Hall in Half Moon Lane) and you will be provided with the address once your place has been confirmed on the course.
The course runs in two parts.
Each class runs from 7pm – 9pm and the course will be running on the following dates:
Class 1: Monday 21st January 2019
Class 2: Monday 28th January 2019
Class 3: Monday 4th February 2019
Class 4: Monday 11th February 2019
There is then a one week break in the course and classes resume on Monday 25th February 2019 at the same time and at the same venue.
Class 5: Monday 25th February 2019
Class 6: Monday 4th March 2019
Class 7: Monday 11th March 2019
Class 8: Monday 18th March 2019
You are encouraged, as far as possible, to attend all of the classes, as each builds on the one that precedes it and the course 'unfolds' gradually over the eight-week period.
As an essential part of the learning process, and in order to obtain the best from the course, you will also be encouraged to meditate for around 25 minutes each day, depending upon the theme for the week. Whilst the amount of home practice you do is entirely up to you, you are somewhat short-changing yourself if you don't give this a go! There is, however, no pressure or requirement to do the home meditation practices, should you decide not to.
