Mindful walking on an expanse of beach at low tide is accompanied by an audio guide. The guide consists of a series of suggestions and invitations to enhance your participation, in addition to some short pieces of music and spoken word. We hope that this guide will pique your interest and bring a sense of freshness and curiosity to the experience of the body and walking in an inter-tidal space. This walk is not about reaching a destination as much as bringing to the foreground of awareness an appreciation of the body in movement and the particularity of place.
If you have walked with us before please consider joining us again. The audio guide may be the same (although in reality the materials that make up the audio guide will have degraded since you last walked) but nothing else will be. Many of the cells in your body will have died and been replaced by new ones. Your frame of mind and state of heart are new in each moment. Your experience since that time will have left its trace on your brain. The sea will have rolled in and rolled back out over the sand many times since you last walked this shoreline, the weather pattern will be different and the world will have moved on.
"A story is told again and again, and yet each new telling is a new event"
- Ursula K Le Guin -
We will be meeting at 4pm at Marine Gardens car park (on the sea front, at the end of Hillfield Road) Selsey PO20 0JL. The walking time is approximately 1 hour.
The walking itself is gentle overall and you are actively encouraged to choose the way in which you participate in the walk to accommodate your body as it is on that day, and in that moment. There is, however, usually a short, unstable and steep bank of shingle to negotiate to get down on to the beach itself before we begin walking. Walking, standing, and some brief periods of sitting and lying down will be on a mostly sandy beach. Please wear clothing appropriate for these activities and for the weather on the day. The walk will go ahead in the event of bad weather!
MP3 players with headphones and pre-loaded with the audio guide and ready for use are supplied on the day.
The cost of the walk is £4 per person and booking is via the TicketSource website.
Please note that whilst this walk is open to all, if it sounds as though getting down on to the beach may be difficult for you why not try our 'Reflection and Connection' event on Sunday May 28th May at 3pm ? This has been developed for those who use mobility scooters or walking aids and people who may just need a steadying arm when they walk. The walking distance is minimal and tickets for companions are free! See here for more details.
